Govt to act against wrongdoings reported by Auditor-General

(Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said he was disappointed at excesses and discrepancies highlighted by the Auditor-General in his 2008 report this week and warned that punitive action will be taken.

“The important thing in the aftermath of the report is whether we will undertake measures.

“Some punitive measures may be necessary against those who flout rules and regulations,” he said when asked at a media briefing on the 2010 Budget at the Treasury today.

Najib said as part and parcel of good governance, the government should reward good performance but take action against those who crossed the line.

He was confident that the situation would improve with the introduction of the Key Performance Indicators and Key Result Areas (KRAs) announced earlier this year as part of efforts to boost service delivery.

“People will realise their performance will be measured,” said Najib, who surprised the media by personally briefing them of the budget which he would table in Parliament tomorrow for the first time as the prime minister.

Najib recently appointed Datuk Seri Idris Jala, former managing director of Malaysia Airlines, to the Cabinet and as chief executive officer of the Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Pemandu) which monitors the KPIs.
