Tian Chua could be disqualified as MP

Batu Member of Parliament (MP) Chua Tian Chang, better known as Tian Chua, was sentenced to six months jail and fined RM3,000 after he was today found guilty by the Magistrate’s Court of hurting a police officer on 11 Dec 2007.

The court, however, allowed a stay pending Chua’s appeal. If the judgement is upheld during appeal, Chua, who is from Parti Keadilan Rakyat, would be disqualified from holding the MP’s post, which means fresh elections would have to be held for the Batu constituency.

According to the law, an elected representative is disqualified from his or her elected office if he or she is jailed more than a year or fined more than RM2,000. — Bernama
