Hisham: Johor and Negri princes may settle case out of court

(The Star) – THE case concerning the royal families of Johor and Negri Sembilan, who were allegedly involved in a brawl at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur late last year, may be settled out of court.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said in a written reply to John Fernandez (DAP — Seremban) that he was informed that the royal houses may want to settle the case to safeguard the good name of both families.

The police, he said, were still carrying out investigation “with care”, given the involvement of royalty.

Hishammuddin said: “The case involved many witnesses who have yet given their statements to aid investigations. There are also witnesses still overseas undergoing military training.”

The complainant, Tunku Nadzimuddin Tunku Mudzaffar, a grandson of the late Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan, claimed that he was assaulted by the Raja Muda of Johor Tunku Ismail Idris and his men for “unknown reasons”.

Tunku Nadzimuddin later lodged a police report on the incident at the Dang Wangi police station.

The brawl was said to have occurred after a scuffle which broke out earlier at a nightspot.

The alleged brawl had mostly been kept under wraps until Tunku Nadzimuddin gave a press conference in September, in which he voiced his disappointment over what he felt was a lack of action from the police.

Tunku Nadzimuddin, 37, had said he was at a club with his then girlfriend and now wife Nur Azini Kamal, 32, to meet some friends on the night of Oct 24.

Palace sources from Johor had said the allegations were baseless and that the Raja Muda was not involved in the fight especially since he was an army officer trained to be disciplined.

The Johor royal family were of the view that the alleged assault came out in the open now because they did not agree to the Negri Sembilan royalty’s demand for RM50mil in compensation and an unconditional apology.
