Police report against Nga Kor Ming for questioning funds for mosques

(Bernama) – The Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa (Perkasa) of Pahang today lodged a police report against Taiping parliamentarian Nga Kor Ming over his statement questioning government expenditure in the construction of mosques.

Perkasa Pahang president Dr Zubir Harun said Nga’s statement was derogatory to Islam, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the other Malay rulers.

“Nga Kor Ming’s statement smacked of sedition, is derogatory to Islam, and can spark serious religious conflict,” he told reporters outside the Bentong police station after making the report.

Yesterday, Nga circulated a statement at the media centre at Parliament House questioning the RM748.26 million spent by the government to build 611 mosques between 2000 and 2008 while it did not build any house of worship of the other religions.

Zubir said the statement by Nga, who is DAP treasurer general, was discourteous and racist, indicating that he had no understanding of Article 3 of the Federal Constitution.

He claimed that the Malay leaders in PAS and PKR did not protest against Nga’s statement because they were blinded by their glorification of the DAP for the sake of political interests.

Meanwhile, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Maj Gen (Rtd) Jamil Khir Baharom said the government expenditure of RM748 million on the construction of mosques should not be questioned.

“I feel we understand that it is a constitutional provision that allocations be made for the construction of mosques, and it is something that we have agreed and acknowledged in the constitution,” he told reporters after presenting excellence awards from the Federal Territory Islamic Council (MAIWP) to students and undergraduates.

Jamil said the construction of mosques should be viewed positively and encouraged and not questioned.

He said questioning the construction of houses of worship could touch on the sensitivities of the people of various religions in the country.
