对事不对人 vs 官官相卫 [Dui Shi Bu Dui Ren vs Guan Guan Xiang Wei]

“Dui Shi Bu Dui Ren” means “Being concerned with the matter and not the individual” in Chinese.
Often this good virtue is misinterpreted as a bad thing to have for a political party especially in Malaysia.

Guan Guan Xiang Wei” means “Bureaucrats protect one another” in Chinese.
Often this bad virtue is misinterpreted as being a united and problem-free co-operation which is a good thing to have for a political party especially in Malaysia.

Let’s take a look at the situations below.

On exposing corruptions.

Situation A:
In Malaysia, the rakyat feels good and happy whenever PR exposes whatever corruption scandals involving BN’s politicians. They will start to sing high praises for PR on the exposed scandals and take the opportunity to whack BN.

When this happens, BN will start to protect themselves – everyone will give their cooperation to stay united to ignore the exposed scandals. No one is allowed to say anything about it.

Next, they will launch their counter-attack by slamming PR for slandering them and keep the scandalous news out of the main stream media so that the poor internet-less kampung folks will not know about the exposed scandals.

Due to the lack of sensationalization in the media, soon, the rakyat will forget about the scandals just like what BN always predicts. It is a brilliant political strategy that never fails in Malaysia.

Situation B:
So, what happens when PR exposes some corruption scandals involving their own politicians? PR’s politicians will start defending themselves in the media – while the BN-controlled media will seize the opportunity to start sensationalizing the issues and tweak it to look like there’s a big fight among PR’s partners over the exposed scandals.

Eventually, the whole truth of the exposed scandals will be out in the open, and the rakyat can get to know the whole story about the alleged scandals. MACC, police and the AG will be on gear-5 to act if there’s enough evidence provided.

More often than not, the rakyat will feel uneasy and unhappy over the exposed scandals involving PR’s politicians by their very own partners. The rakyat will start to ask, why can’t PR talk in private before exposing these scandals?

This act is often considered as open-bickering – and the rakyat says this act kills their confidence in PR. They will start threatening PR to either buck up or ship-out come next general election.

Ok, now let us start analyzing the exposing corruptions of Situation A and Situation B above.

PR is going after corruption in Situation A and B. They don’t put priority on who; they will expose whatever corruption scandals they find. They are party-blind when it comes to corruption. This is an example of the good virtue “Dui Shi Bu Dui Ren”.

Meanwhile BN helps to “solve” and highlight the corruption scandals exposed if, and especially if, it involves PR’s politicians but choose to keep quiet when it involves their own politicians. So, we can say that solving corruption scandals is not their main focus. Their main focus is just to take the opportunity to strike PR. BN’s way of keeping a united silence on an exposed scandal is a good example of the bad virtue “Guan Guan Xiang Wei”.

Now, let us see what is the real reason the rakyat is happy in Situation A but not in Situation B? If corruption is their main concern, the rakyat should be happy in both Situation A and B. Since they are not consistent in their feelings, we can conclude that they actually don’t care much about corruption. Judging from Situation A and B, the rakyat seems to encourage PR to cover-up and talk in private when it comes to exposing their own people of corruption – and they should only expose corruption scandals IF it involves BN’s politicians. In other words, the rakyat is actually hinting to PR that they should practice “Guan Guan Xiang Wei” and “Dui Ren Bu Dui Shi” [NOTE:: it is the opposite of “Dui Shi Bu Dui Ren”] in their style of politics.

The rakyat is a fool when it comes to evaluating the good and the bad sides of the 2 virtues [“Dui Shi Bu Dui Ren” and “Guan Guan Xiang Wei”] in politics.

Haven’t we got enough of BN’s “Guan Guan Xiang Wei” attitude over the past 50 years? Haven’t we seen enough injustice because BN is not practicing “Dui Shi Bu Dui Ren” virtue over the past 50 years?

If yes, why are we subconsciously encouraging PR to practice the same thing?

If we don’t start practicing “Dui Shi Bu Dui Ren” NOW – we can expect PR to transform to be exactly the same as BN in a few years’ time, because that’s the only way they can keep us from not grumbling too much.

FOOLISH, isn’t it?
