I remember the “balance” shown by our home ministry.
I remember about two years ago when I started attending a few candlelight vigils for Raja Petra Kamaruddin, Tan Hoon Cheng, Teresa Kok, A. Kugan, democracy in Perak, Wong Chin Huat, Teoh Beng Hock, and others, the home ministry gave us no such consideration for “balance”.

In anticipation of protests tomorrow after Friday prayers by Muslim groups over the “Allah” issue, this is what home minister Hishammuddin had to say today.
“There is a balance that needs to be addressed. We (the Home Ministry) have faced this situation before. Right now, if you do not allow the protest, it will cause a lot of emotional reaction. But if you also allow it, it might turn into a security threat.”
“As long as it does not affect national security, we will not stop it yet. We plan to get closer to the would-be demonstrators and try to talk to them first.”

Instead we were threatened with police action for illegal assembly and in fact on many occasions we were unceremoniously dispersed (sometimes aggressively) when all we were doing were lighting candles, moaning the state-sponsored injustices mete out to ordinary Malaysians by powers-that-be, and the assaults on democracy and civil liberties. Some of us were even picked-up by the police on “suruhan dari atas”!
What threats were we to national security? There was nothing racial or religious that we were protesting peacefully against. We were merely exercising our love for the country by showing solidarity with fellow Malaysians who were victims of oppression. We were only doing our patriotic duty to prevent the nation from becoming a failed state because of politics and we were doing it so peacefully that you could even bring a three-month old baby there (not that I would recommend it)!
Why didn’t the home ministry show such balance then and why only now?
