Two Muar suraus torched


(Free Malaysia Today) – Two suraus in Muar, located some two kilometres apart, came under arson attack early this morning, with one sustaining serious damage, according to police.

Muar deputy police chief Lee Choon Guan said the first incident, at Kampung Sabok Awor, occurred around 3am and the second, at in Kampung Parit Beting, some 45 minutes later.

He said the second surau was badly damaged with its carpet, doors and windows scorched. Stones were also thrown at the building. As for the first surau, only its curtains were damaged, according to a Malaysiakini report.

Kampung Sabak Awor surau’s imam, Haji Deris Sehan, 63, told the news portal that the assailants had used kerosene to start the fire.

He said a resident who witnessed the incident alerted the Fire and Rescue Department.

Since Jan 8, there has been a spate of attacks on houses of worship,most of them churches. This followed a High Court ruling allowing the Herald, a Catholic weekly to use “Allah” for “God” in its Bahasa Malaysia section.
