UUM appointment for Zainuddin

(Bernama) – Former Information Minister Tan Sri Zainuddin Maidin has been appointed Universiti Utara Malaysia’s (UUM) Karyawan Tamu, effective March 1.

UUM vice-chancellor Tan Sri Dr Nordin Kardi (one-time BTN head) said the appointment was in recognition of Zainuddin’s contribution to journalism since he joined the field in 1957.

“We not only see Zainuddin as a journalist who obtained experience while working, but also as one who has formal education, and this combination will hopefully be beneficial to students at UUM,” he told reporters after the appointment ceremony here yesterday.

Dr Nordin said the recognition was not new for the university but showed how UUM had matured over 26 years since its establishment.

The event is held in conjunction with the 23rd UUM Convocation Day from March 27 to 29.

Meanwhile, Zainuddin described it as a big honour for him as UUM was the first university to appoint him Karyawan Tamu which would also help him produce more works in journalism.

“This is a recognition whereby, I can contribute to history, he said. Kedah-born Zainuddin, 71, was appointed Karyawan Tamu for a year.
