Many eligible voters not able to vote, says Sabah MP


(Free Malaysia Today) – If Sabah’s opposition parties fail to get the electoral rolls corrected in time for the next general election, it could cost them seats in the new parliament and state assembly.

How the high-stakes battle shakes out is a mystery to Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament Dr. Hiew King Cheu.

He is puzzled why retired uniformed personnel are still listed under the category as postal voters in their previous areas of service.

He said he had received many complaints from the retired uniform personnel regarding their voting status and brought up the matter in parliament recently.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nazri Aziz acknowledged that this was the case and that the Election Commission (SPR) was updating its list of registered voters and cleaning up the electoral roll.

Nazri explained that the names of retired police and arm forces were still listed as postal voters because they had not informed the SPR of their retirement.
