Najib dangles bigger ‘ang pow’ if BN wins

(FMT) HULU YAM BARU: Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak gave ‘ang pows’ to the Chinese community and promised a bigger packet if the BN wins in the crucial Hulu Selangor by-election this Sunday.

He and other MCA top leaders descended on the Chinese-majority town here in a bid to win the hearts and minds of the Chinese voters.

Almost 16,891 Chinese voters crossed their marks for PKR in the 2008 general election as a sign of protest.

Newly elected MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek hit the campaign trail for the first time in the company of secretary-general Kong Cho Ha, vice-president Dr Ng Yen Yen and other top brass. This time, BN hoped to rebuild stronger ties with the community.

About 300 people, mostly clad in “1Malaysia” T-shirts, turned up to see the VIPs.

Najib later told the crowd that the most important aspect of a by-election was to “fulfil our promises”.

“I have allocated RM90,000 for the Ulu Yam Kwang Tung cemetery and more allocations for Hokkien and muhibbah associations,” he said.

“Even before winning, we are already giving out ang pows. If we win, the ang pows will be bigger,” he said to applause and chants of “hidup BN” and “1Malaysia”.

In the eye of the world

In his short speech, Najib, who still seemed to be excited over his meeting with US president Barack Obama in Washington recently, said a victory would make Hulu Selangor popular in the eye of the world.

“We have great potential to rise and be successful and we will tell Obama about it (our success). Although I think he does not know where Hulu Selangor is, he will know once we win,” he said.
