Royal contractor spat adds to botched Shah Alam hospital woes

(The Malaysian Insider) – The Selangor Sultan’s nephew will today join his sub-contractor to wind up his own company that is behind the botched and overpriced Shah Alam Hospital, which remains uncompleted till this day.

The 300-bed hospital in Section 7, which had been scheduled for completion in Aug 14, 2010, has been rescheduled for November 2010 and now June 2011. Contractor Sunshine Fleet Sdn Bhd, initially cost it at RM300 million in 2007 but the final sticker price is now RM482 million.

Sunshine Fleet company director Putera Azamuddin Shah Abdul Aziz instructed his lawyers to file a petition to wind up the company today after receiving no response to the letter of demand issued on April 13.

“This petition is being filed under Section 181 of the Companies Act 1965, which entitles a minority shareholder to invoke this section when there are concerns of oppression of the minority by the majority shareholders,” his lawyers , Rajan Navaratnam Advocates and Solicitors, said in a statement.

The law firm said the young prince was referring “to situations when there are concerns that the conduct and affairs of the company are being handled in a prejudicial manner not in the best interests of the company.”

Sunshine Fleet is owned by the Selangor Sultan’s sister Tengku Putri Arafiah ibni Sultan Abd Aziz Shah (70 per cent), her uncle Tengku Abdul Samad Shah Sultan Salahuddin Abd Aziz (20 per cent) and her son Putera Azamuddin Shah Abdul Aziz (10 per cent).

On winning the contract in 2007, Sunshine Fleet had first sub-contracted the project to ailing construction firm, Isyoda. Isyoda was unable to complete the project after it was delisted from Bursa Malaysia, and is in the process of being wound up.

Putera Azamuddin owns 10 per cent of the company while the majority shareholder is his mother Tengku Putri Arafiah ibni Sultan Abd Aziz Shah

Pakatan Rakyat MPs Tony Pua (Petaling Jaya Utara-DAP) and Khalid Samad (Shah Alam-PAS) last week asked the federal government to terminate the contract due to Sunshine Fleet’s inability to manage the project.
