Karpal quizzed by police over Bumi privileges

GEORGE TOWN: Veteran politician Karpal Singh was today quizzed for nearly two hours by the police for allegedly questioning Bumiputera privileges at a press conference here on April 4.

ASP Ibrahim Husin from the Penang police headquarters arrived at Karpal’s law firm in Green Hall here at 11.30am to record a statement following a police report lodged against the two-term Bukit Gelugor MP.

The report was lodged on April 6 by Peninsular Malay Students Federation (GPMS) president Jais Abdul Karim in Kuala Lumpur based on a news article that appeared in a Malay tabloid – Sinar Harian.

Police are investigating the case under Sedition Act 1948.

There are also another six reports lodged by different people on similar allegations against Karpal.

A total of 110 reports have been lodged against Karpal over the past one year for alleged seditious offences, which the MP suggested could be a world record against an elected representative.

The other 103 reports, said Karpal, were for his statement that the Sultan of Perak can be sued for acting unconstitutionally during the Perak coup in February 2009.

“The police questioning session today was cordial,” Karpal told reporters later.

Insisting that he has not done or said anything wrong, Karpal nevertheless is prepared to face the legal consequence, if any, for his statement last month.
