Ibrahim Ali: Tok Guru has insulted me

KUALA LUMPUR: Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali said that Tok Guru Nik Aziz has insulted him by going against the Sultan of Selangor’s decree that mosques should not be used as a political platform.

“As a Kelantanese, I’m insulted and ashamed by Nik Aziz’s statement,” Ibrahim told FMT. “Although he’s the Kelantan Menteri Besar, his opinion isn’t reflective of Kelantanese as a whole and I want people to know that.”

“The Sultan’s order is based on the constitution. Religious affairs are the responsibility of the Sultan and we must respect that.”

The issue of using mosques as a political arena flared up during the recent Hulu Selangor by-election, when Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah forbade such practice in order to retain the purity of the place.

Nik Aziz later defended the right to hold political talks in mosques, reasoning that Friday sermons cannot be restricted to religion alone as politics is also a part of Islam.
