BN averted another by-election last month when Datuk Seri Najib Razak dissuaded Kalabakan MP Datuk Abdul Ghapur Salleh from quitting his seat over allegations that he supported PR’s Sept 16 takeover.

The two-term MP sent his resignation letter to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia at the end of March, two weeks after PKR turncoat Datuk Seri Zahrain Hashim claimed Abdul Ghapur was among eight BN federal lawmakers ready to defect to support Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s plans.

But the prime minister and Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman persuaded the former Sabah deputy chief minister to withdraw his resignation letter, avoiding another by-election. There has been 11 by-elections since Election 2008.

The 66-year-old Kalabakan Umno division leader declined to confirm when contacted over the matter.

The Malaysian Insider understands that the Sabah MP took the extraordinary step to protect his reputation after several national and state BN leaders labelled him as an “Anwar man” for allegedly trying to leave Umno.
