PKR Congress: 2 male delegates support Wanita plea for 30% representation
(The Star) – At least two male delegates have come forward to support PKR Wanita’s plea to be allocated 30% representation in party posts.
Delegates from Johor Shahrulizan Harun and Pahang’s Abas Awang both agreed that the Wanita wing should be given more representation in the party, including as candidates for the coming election.
Shahrulizan said gender equality was much needed in a party that was beset with problems.
“The womenfolk can play an important stabilising factor owing to many defections within the party lately.
“Women are more loyal and they can be a force to be reckoned with in the party as it strives toward achieving excellence in our endeavours,” he said when debating the policy speech.
Shahrulizan also said that, based on statistics, at least 60% of undergraduates were female and this clearly indicated that they were bound to become the centre of political power in future.
Abas went further by saying that the women would one day rule the country as they had proved that they were more resilient than their male counterparts.
“Look around you, women are playing more important roles nowadays and they should be considered for gender equality because it is time that women take up more responsibilities to help their male counterparts within the party,” he said.
Penang delegate Datuk Abdul Halim suggested that the party set-up a youth parliament to expose children as young as 13-years-old to the process of democracy.
Abdul Halim added that this was important as it would help solve problems related to voting rights.
“We would not have problems about voters from the younger generation refusing to vote because they would already know the importance of exercising their rights as citizens.
“This is possible provided they are part of the youth parliament that I had suggested earlier,’ he said.
