Friends of Pakatan Rakyat Forum – The Rising Tide of Democracy in Malaysia
We are fortunate to have four outstanding individuals visiting London next week who represent the various segments of Malaysian political life – civil society and NGO, city council, state assembly and parliament. Each of them has made significant contributions to the nation and they will spend an afternoon with us, sharing their experiences and answering our questions.
The speakers are:
-
Cynthia Gabriel – SUARAM Director and a Councillor with the Petaling Jaya Municipal Council (MPPJ)
-
Latheefa Koya – Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Information Chief and a Councillor with the Petaling Jaya Municipal Council (MPPJ)
-
Dr. Xavier Jayakumar – PKR Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri (ADUN) in the Selangor State Assembly and the Chairman of the Health, Plantation Workers, Poverty and Caring Government Committee
-
Tian Chua – Member of Parliament for the Batu constituency in Kuala Lumpur and PKR Information Chief
Together, they will paint a broad picture of how democracy in Malaysia is changing for the better despite the many hurdles that they face. Take this opportunity to explore how they are conducting themselves through their current executive roles as well as the new initiatives promulgated by Pakatan Rakyat. Recent examples include
– local government elections
– freedom of information act
– creation of a Speakers’ Corner
– handling of the sand mining corruption allegations
