The report OVER HERE shows that Japan is no 8 (2009-2010) up ONE place from no 9 (2008-2009). That means Japan is 16 places AHEAD of Malaysia!!
I wonder which statistics our PM was referring to when he said that “we are 13 spots higher than Japan”. Can anyone explain?

I often wonder whether people mean what they say. Words are cheap but deeds are priceless. It is easy to fall prey to rhetoric, public relations stunts or even media messages crafted by experts to persuade the target audience. I wonder whether you have read THIS ARTICLE extracted from The Star:
KUALA LUMPUR: Young high flyers with potential to become global champions will not have their wings clipped by the quota system, said the Prime Minister.
“If they are determined, the Government will assist them. The philosophy of merely defending the quota system and special consideration must change,” said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
His words were received with loud cheers from the 15,000 youths participating in 1Malaysia Rally organised by Barisan Nasional Youth at Stadium Bukit Jalil yesterday.
He called on youths not to be fearful in striding forward, as the Government would help them overcome obstacles.
“Have no fear, Barisan Nasional is here,” he said, adding that the Government aimed to nurture national, regional and global champions.
MERITOCRACY
Does the first sentence of the report mean that our PM is going to do away with the quota system and implement meritocracy? Since he said that as long as the youth are determined,the Government will assist them. Is he giving us REAL HOPE or is it MERE HOLLOW SOUNDING RHETORIC when he said that that the philosophy of merely defending the quota system and special consideration must change?
I am glad that he realizes that “youths are idealistic. They want to do something to make the world a better place.” Or course! More and more students are working hard to get to the top to secure scholarships because not many can afford to pay for university education. As a PM, please help the youth to help make Malaysia a better place by raising education standards and offering places in public universities and scholarships on the basis of merit that the quality of human resources in our country can be continuously improved!!!
Our PM has said that “with their idealism and energy, we can harness their latent talents to bring about great changes to the country” and that the Government’s approach was to accommodate youths. Can he and the Education Minister tell us in clear terms how the government intends to do this?
Elected MPs MUST press the PM and the related ministries for more details as a follow up to this speech.
I laud the PM’s statement that the Government also wanted to make Malaysia among the top five globally competitive nations.
VALIDITY/RELIABILITY OF STATISTICS
After reading the article, I did some research as I was MOST skeptical with the statistics given in the article.
According to our PM, he said :
“We now rank among the top 10 on the global competitive index from 18th spot last year. We are in a better position than our colonial masters.
“We are also 13 spots higher than Japan,” he said, adding that no other OIC or NAM nation had made it to the top 10 list.”
I checked with the World Economic Forum official website HERE and downloaded the latest report from HERE and the latest data shows that Malaysia is ranked no. 24 (for 2009-2010) showing A DROP OF THREE PLACES from rank no. 21.
