KUCHING: Sarawak National Party (SNAP) has rejected outright calls to close shop and rejoin the Barisan Nasional through Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP).
Having just been given a new lease in life on Wednesday by the Court of Appeal, SNAP which is one of the oldest political parties in Sarawak slammed SPDP leadership for the suggestion.
A visibly angry SNAP secretary general Stanley Jugol said: “ We have been fighting for our life for the past eight years and suddenly you ask us to close shop and join SPDP.
“What a bloody fool statement to have come from SPDP William Mawan Ikom.”
Jugol was commenting on a statement allegedly made by Mawan who wanted SNAP to windup and join SPDP.
Mawan had allegedly offered SPDP as a vehicle for the remaining SNAP members to join the Barisan Nasional.
“Since SPDP is an off-shoot of SNAP, it will be a sort of home-coming for the existing SNAP members, if they want to join the BN,” Mawan had reportedly said.
Rebutting Mawan’s comment Jugol snapped: “Yes, SPDP is an off-shoot of SNAP. It is an ‘anak ampang’ SNAP (SNAP’s illegitimate off-shoot).”
“We have never approved of it. It is because of SPDP that SNAP was about to be deregistered. You have caused all the troubles in SNAP and now you want us to close shop.
“Luckily after eight years of suffering and uncertainty, SNAP is given a new life.”
