I did meet RPK… so what! says Zaid
(Free Malaysia Today) PETALING JAYA: PKR supreme council member Zaid Ibrahim today took a swipe at Bayan Baru MP Zahrain Mohamed Hashim for making an issue of his meeting with fugitive blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin (RPK) in the United Kingdom last year.
“A lawmaker is supposed to be a person who debates issues of national interest in Parliament. That will prove the lawmaker has good ideas to share and is not being a mere lackey of any particular individual,” Zaid said in reference to Zahrain’s allegations yesterday that Zaid may be providing financial aid to the blogger and urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to probe the link.
While Zaid admitted to meeting RPK in Manchester last year, he refuted allegations that RPK stayed at the hotel with him.
“Yes, he booked a room for me at Hotel Britannia but he did not stay with me as his house is just 15 minutes away from the hotel.
“RPK and his wife Marina Lee are my friends. Every time I visit London I make it a point to see them. I even paid for the the blogger’s ticket to watch a football match in Old Trafford.”
“RPK had to leave Malaysia due to his struggle to uphold the truth, a struggle people like Zahrain will never understand,” he said, adding that “abandoning friends who are in need” was not his trait.
Zaid also made a bold proclamation that he will meet RPK again when he visits London next week.
“God-willing, I’ll be meeting RPK and his wife. I will also meet Bala (private investigator P Balasubramaniam) if the MACC refuses to meet him,” he said, referring to another call by Zahrain for the MACC to probe the source of Balasubramaniam’s financial support as the latter was also now residing in London.
