Harussani must resign, says Mahfuz

KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 – PAS vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar today said Perak Mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria must resign for allegedly lying on his meeting with Selangor PAS comissioner Datuk Hasan Ali was over political cooperation between the Islamist party and Umno.
Mahfuz said Harussani has become a political tool for Umno.
“Tan Sri Harussani should resign as Perak Mufti as he had said before that as a mufti, he would not lie, but Datuk Hasan’s statement showed that Tan Sri Harussani had lied,” said Mahfuz in a statement today.
Hasan said on weekend his meeting with Harussani, a conservative seen as being close to Umno, was part of his many engagements in his capacity as a Selangor state executive councillor responsible for Islamic affairs and Malay customs.
He also denied discussing Malay unity issues with the Perak Mufti.
“It was clear that the meeting did not touch on PAS-Umno cooperation. The meeting was held prior to the national council of Islamic affairs meeting,” said Mahfuz.
