TNB to sue WWF – State involvement in a humorous parody?

But why involve the state? Is the state’s ego synonymous with TNB’s CEO’s?

I remember reading something about TNB to sue WWF over the Earth Hour on some online news portals a few months ago. My initial reaction then was “wait a minute, this sounds more like a joke than factual”, so I searched for the source of that allegation. Having read the original posting by Hassan Skodeng then in his blog Nose4news and read it in the context it was written, I had a good laugh over it realizing that it was a beautifully crafted piece of humor and parody on TNB.

That was until I heard that Irwan Abdul Rahman @ Hassan Skodeng, owner of Nose4news and Malay Mail editor was charged for violation of Section 223 (1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 – “improper use of network facilities or network service by making, creating, soliciting and initiating transmission of any content that is obscene, indecent, false, menacing or offensive in character with malicious intent.” And if found guilty, could be subject to a fine up to RM50,000/- or a jail term up to one year or both.

This is no longer a joke! This is serious shit when good humored Malaysians are prosecuted by the state for bringing a good laugh to other Malaysians albeit at the expense of some whose ego requires a bashing. But why involve the state? Is the state’s ego synonymous with TNB’s CEO’s?

If TNB and its CEO Che Khalib Mohd Nor felt slighted by Hassan Skodeng, wouldn’t the obvious course of action be to sue Hassan Skodeng for defamation? Why involve the state and more importantly why did the state acquiesced to something which is a civil matter of defamation, if it is even that in the first place?

Have the “little napoleons” taken over the running of this country? Has it reached a stage whereby UMNO/BN created and tolerated little napoleons are more powerful than their political masters? It would seem so in my eyes so what good is it to keep UMNO/BN around when they can’t even reign-in their loose cannons? When can UMNO/BN administer this country properly without worrying about bruised egos?
