Bar Council: No agenda in ‘MyConstitution’ campaign

The Bar Council has clarified that its nationwide “MyConstitution” campaign has no seditious intent or agenda to amend the Federal Constitution.

Council president Ragunath Kesavan said the primary purpose of the campaign was to make the articles of the Constitution easier for the public to understand.

He said this at a press conference held in response to a police report lodged on Monday by the 1Malaysia Youth Graduates Club in Serdang, calling for action to be taken against the campaigners for allegedly promoting the changing of provisions in the Constitution, especially those touching on the special position of Malays and Islam.

The committee’s co-deputy chairpersons, Syahredzan Johan and Mahaletchumi Balakrishnan, said the campaign was aimed at simplifying the Constitution so that all Malaysians would have access to its contents.

Since its inception, representatives of the legislative, executive and judiciary branches of the Government has come out to support this campaign.

Syahredzan invited the 1Malaysia Youth Graduates Club to meet with the organisors to get a better understanding of the campaign.

Mahaletchumi said 90,000 booklets had been distributed nationwide todate with the support of the Federal government and in partnership with several state governments — including Sarawak, Selangor and Kedah.

“We’re certainly not funded by foreign or anti-government NGOs as alleged,” she added.
