KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim today asked the Najib administration to confirm or deny reports of serious inconsistencies in the audited account of 1Malaysia Development Fund Bhd (1MDB) for the fiscal year that ended last March.

The auditors had apparently refused to endorse the account, Anwar said in a statement released this morning.

Referring to “news spreading like wildfire”, he said the auditors found that the account was riddled with inconsistencies.

1MDB has been the subject of controversy since Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak’s office announced its formation last year. It was the Terengganu Investment Authority expanded into a federal entity woth the consent of the Sultan of Terengganu, the current Yang di-Pertuan Agong. The company been associated with playboy millionaire Jho Low, but the latter has denied the link.

Anwar noted the government announcement last year that 1MDB would initially raise RM5 billion through government-guaranteed bonds and a more recent announcement that it was seeking to borrow another RM5 billion that would not have direct government guarantee, but would be settled through state-backed bonds worth RM10 billion.
