1 Malaysia, Najib’s great Utopian dream

SEPT 30 — First and foremost, I wish to state that although I read Greek mythology in a time lost in the mists of antiquity, I have no time for people with grandiose and unrealistic dreams or visions. I have always believed that one must never have their head in the clouds especially more so if one is a leader of a nation. To those among my friends and relatives who like to dream, I will always say, “wake up and face reality”.

Not too long ago, our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had a great dream of uniting the peoples of Malaysia for the common good of the nation under the 1 Malaysia banner. But I was never even for a moment taken in by his sloganeering because I know that his 1 Malaysia dream is near impossible to achieve as there are many racists in his own camp.

A good friend of mine, who is a well-known intellectual, has said that he is a relentless optimist. Well, and good. I always admire people who are optimistic because I am an eternal pessimist and I was pessimistic about Najib’s chances of making 1 Malaysia a success right from the beginning itself.

I tried very hard to believe in Najib’s great Utopian dream that all the races in this country will live happily and prosperously ever after. But naah, it seems too good to be true. There is no and never will be a Utopia.

And the reality speaks for itself. The most recent racist remarks were made by a National Civics Bureau (BTN, Biro Tata Negara) official on September 27 at a Puteri Umno event when this said official said: “The ‘si mata sepet’ that has never gone to a mosque or surau only has one vote. The ‘si botol’ that only knows how to go up to Batu Caves up and down only has one vote.”

The “Si Mata Sepet” or “Mr Slit-Eyes” is an obvious reference to the Chinese while “Si Botol” or “Mr Bottle” refers to the Indians and what is worse here is that it implies that all Indians like to drink, hence the association with the liquor bottle.

In my honest opinion, these racist remarks are absolutely disgusting and seem to be filled with venom and loathing. I am angry and sad at the same time that after 53 years of Merdeka, there are still people in the government sector who go around making derogatory racists comments. This just goes to show that the 1 Malaysia slogan that Najib goes around singing is an unknown tune to the 5th Column in the National Civics Bureau when it is they who should go around promoting his 1 Malaysia policy. But instead, they spout racist statements in an obvious attempt to negate his Utopian dream.

Not to forget the earlier cases of the two school principals who also spouted racist remarks when these educators should be practising 1 Malaysia as directed by their boss Najib. He seems to be the only one (pardon the pun) talking himself hoarse on the 1 Malaysia topic. The MCA and MIC, although supportive of Najib, don’t seem to be talking about 1 Malaysia with the same fiery passion as him. Their support seems weak and muted, not like fire and brimstone.

That said and done, I would like to see 1 Malaysia being truly practised. But with the 5th Column in Najib’s own ranks, it seems highly doubtful.
