EC: Simultaneous polls for Galas, Batu Sapi unlikely

(TMI) By-elections for the Galas state seat and Batu Sapi federal seat may not be held at the same time, Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said.

The EC has already set November 4 as polling day for the Galas by-election with nomination day fixed for October 26. It has yet to meet over the Batu Sapi by-election.

“Personally, I do not think it is possible that both will be held on the same day,” Abdul Aziz told The Malaysian Insider.

“This is my view at this early stage. I will need to discuss this with EC panel members. They may have different views.”

The EC is expected to be officially notified of the Batu Sapi seat vacancy when Parliament reconvenes today.

Batu Sapi fell vacant following two-term MP Datuk Edmund Chong Ket Wah’s fatal accident in Kota Kinabalu on Saturday. His death has triggered the country’s 13th by-election since Election 2008, with Galas being the 12th.
