Special council set up to watch over bumiputra economic interests, says PM

“We are not angry when others profit.
“We are not angry when others are rich.
“In fact, they get rich because of Umno.
“Who gives these people licences for rice, sugar, independent power production and satellites if not Umno?
“When we want to help the bumiputra, they should not be upset and angry.
“Now this is fair. When they get things, they keep quiet.
“When we want to give (to bumiputra) they complain.
THE Government has set up a special body called the Bumiputra Agenda Supreme Council to look after the bumiputra economic interests.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the council was set up recently and had its first meeting last month.
The council was chaired by him, said the Umno president, while his deputy in the Government and party Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is the deputy chairman.
He said all three Umno vice-presidents who are also in the Cabinet — Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein and Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal — are also members of the council.
“The setting up of the council will ensure that the bumiputra agenda will continue,” he said in his winding-up speech at the end of the Umno General Assembly yesterday.
Another programme to boost bumiputra participation in the economy is the Jejak Jaya Bumiputra Scheme, he said.
Najib added that four bumiputra companies with market capitalisation totalling RM411mil were successfully listed on Bursa Malaysia.
To be listed, he said, companies must have recorded profits for five years as the Securities Commission would want proof of their abilities to gain profit in the future.
“What is needed by these bumiputra companies is a little assistance from the Government at the “last mile.”
“With our assistance, they were listed.
“God willing, next year 11 more bumiputra companies with market capitalisation of almost RM2bil are expected to be listed on Bursa Malaysia.”
Stressing that there must be social justice in the country to ensure fairness and political stability, Najib said Umno would continue to fight for the Malay agenda and the position of bumiputra.
“This cannot be. Fairness for all, this is what we want.
“This is 1Malaysia,” he said.
