More nightclubs under ETP an ‘opium’, says angry PAS

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak’s plan to turn Malaysia into a billion-ringgit revenue generating hub for “nightlife entertainment” under the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) is aimed at lulling Malaysians into overlooking the atrocities of the corrupt Barisan Nasional government, according to PAS.

“Why is he (Najib) and other BN (Barisan Nasional) leaders suggesting such an idea which is against the current? Are they bankrupt of ideas and morals to the point that they are prepared to gamble away the rakyat’s lives?” asked party information chief Idris Ahmad.

Describing the plan as “unthinking”, he said: “On the one hand, the government is expressing concern at the rising cases of abandoned babies and women trafficking. On the other, they propose something like this which will only fuel social ills. Are they even thinking?”

He said that what was most shocking was the plan to create entertainment zones in Greater Kuala Lumpur/Klang Valley, Genting Highlands, Penang, Langkawi and Kota Kinabalu in a bid to increase the entertainment revenue to RM1.8 billion by 2020.

“This plan is a sort of opium aimed at lulling the people into forgetting the atrocities of the BN like corruption which continues to grip this country,” he said, referring to the recent Corruption Perspective Index (CPI) scores which saw Malaysia drop from 4.5 to 4.4.

Adverse effects

Federal Territories PAS Youth chief Fadhil Osman warned Najib and the government of the adverse consequences of the proposal on the younger generation.

“Don’t just think of profits and sacrifice the younger generation,” he said, adding that the youths were against Najib’s move to turn Malaysia into an entertainment hub.

He said that PAS Youth was shocked that the government had ignored public sentiments in easing the rulings to allow top international entertainment acts to perform here.
