DPM vows fight against graft continues

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today that the government will continue to fight against corruption although the country dipped slightly lower in Transparency International’s (TI) Corruption Perception Index (CPI) this year.

Malaysia kept the same ranking of 56 out of 178 countries last year although the country’s corruption index score declined from 4.5 to 4.4 out of 10, with 10 being the least corrupt.

The deputy prime minister said the government must get rid of corruption before it destroys the country.

“In our fight against corruption, [the] BN leadership is still committed in the fight against corruption. We know that this is cancer and if we stop fighting against this cancer then it will lead to the destruction of our country. We do not compromise on this issue and we will continue to fight against corruption in this country,” Muhyiddin said when opening Gerakan’s AGM here.

However Datuk Seri Idris Jala had insisted that the government was still on track in tackling corruption despite Malaysia continuing to score poorly on the CPI.

The Pemandu CEO downplayed the graft watchdog’s findings, claiming that Malaysia’s CPI score essentially remained the same this year and did not reflect the government’s progress in combating corruption.

Muhyiddin also stressed that BN has introduced the New Economic Model through the Government Transformation Programme and Economic Transformation Programme to protect public welfare.

“This is the process to transform the government because the prime minister is very aware in what is being expected of the people towards this country,” he said.

Muhyiddin added that public no longer wants rhetoric but a government that is transparent and accountable.
