Silence prevails over MAS’s RM8b fiasco

(Harakahdaily) – Kubang Kerian member of parliament and PAS vice president Salahuddin Ayub has again reminded the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to take action on the RM8 billion loss incurred by Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAS).

Salahuddin said the matter had long been raised in Parliament, and a formal letter of complaint was also sent to PAC chairman, Azmi Khalid.

“I have raised the issue of the two letters which I sent to PAC chairman, Azmi Khalid on 13 December 2009 and again on 30 August 2010, in which I appealed PAC to take certain actions on losses suffered by MAS amounting to RM8 billion.

I have also raised these issues in two letters followed by my debate in Parliament,” he told a press conference at the Parliament lobby yesterday.

Salahuddin stressed that the issue of MAS’s losses should be thoroughly investigated as the amount was huge and comparable only to the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) scandal.

“MAS’s losses are the second such scandal after PKFZ, and to save the public money, I raised the issue. I hope this time PAC will call for an investigation into MAS’s losses,” he said, adding that should PAC failed to act, Azmi should be “replaced by someone more capable.

Salahuddin also vowed to take up the issue to higher levels, including Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC).

“I have been consistent in this. I hope actions can be taken to understand how MAS lost its RM8 billion. It requires a full and immediate investigation and hopefully this can bring back some credibility to MACC and PAC.”
