Show must go on, says PKR polls chief

(Bernama) – Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) will go ahead with its polls to elect leaders for the 2010-2013 term despite calls for it to be postponed or cancelled from various quarters in the party, said PKR’s elections committee chairman Dr Molly Cheah.

She said the polls could not be simply called off just because of complaints by some members of irregularities.

“Members must understand, to make a decision takes time, each complaint has to be evaluated individually,” she told a press conference at the party’s headquarters here today.

She was referring to a memorandum submitted by PKR vice president Mustaffa Kamil Ayub, who is contesting the deputy presidency, asking for the polls to be cancelled because of a lack of transparency.

Mustaffa Kamil, the Perak PKR head, had claimed that 162 complaints had been made about the conduct of the election, which began on October 29 and will end on November 21.

On Monday, another deputy president aspirant, Datuk Zaid Ibrahim, pulled out of the contest after complaining about a lack of transparency, leaving Mustaffa Kamil to fight it out with PKR vice president Azmin Ali for the post.

Meanhwile, Mustaffa Kamil when contacted on the development, said he would hold press conference tomorrow to state his stand.

“In my meeting with Dr Molly, we exchanged views on improving the election system and I also received feedback on the memorandum I submitted.

“I will make known my position tomorrow,” he said.
