Parliament rejects motion on youth shootings

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 25 — The Dewan Rakyat rejected an emergency motion today by Subang MP R. Sivarasa to debate the recent shooting of three youths suspected of robbing a petrol station in Glenmarie, Shah Alam.
According to the PKR MP, the motion filed yesterday under Standing Orders 18(1) was rejected in chambers today after it failed to fulfil the criteria of being specific, urgent and of public interest.
At a press conference this afternoon, Sivarasa however told reporters that he had been advised by Deputy Speaker Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar to raise the matter during the committee stage for the Home Ministry.
In his motion, Sivarasa had pointed out that the incident was of public interest as it was yet another in a long list of other police shootings that led to the deaths of innocent civilians.
“If no effective action is taken in these cases, the public will eventually lose all confidence in the police force.
“I wholeheartedly believe that this motion is of a specific matter, urgent and is a matter of public interest,” he had said in his notice.
