Three-month-old City Hall garbage centres collapse

KOTA KINABALU: A spate of collapsing new garbage bin centres built by the City Hall here has compelled an assemblywoman to question if ‘corruption’ was the reason why no tender was called for the construction. The contract was apparently awarded directly to the contractor concerned.

Describing the latest collapse, Luyang assemblywoman Melanie Chia said the incident happened in Sunny garden while the previous two occured in Bandaran Berjaya and Taman Foh Sang. All three bin centres had collapsed within three months of their construction.

“This Sunny Garden Bin Centre looks so new and it is shocking that it can collapse just like that.

“Is there some fault with the structural design of the bin centre? Was there approval from the relevant authority on the structure of the bin centre? Or is there a problem with the supervision of the construction?” she asked.

“Is there any element of corrupt practice here? We are using Kota Kinabalu ratepayers’ money and taxpayers’ money and these monies should be used efficiently and effectively.
