Case of the tense cop: Police vow fair probe

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have promised fairness and transparency in investigating the alleged brutality of a traffic policeman who beat up a mechanic in Wangsa Maju two weeks ago.

Sentul district police chief ACP Zakaria Pagan said the suspect was arrested after the alleged victim, 20-year-old S Karthik (photo), lodged a report against him. He was released on police bail.

According to Karthik, his assailant apologised after the incident, claiming that nervous tension had pushed him to violence.

“If there is evidence to show that the traffic policeman did commit those acts, then of course appropriate action will be taken against him and he will be charged,” Zakaria told FMT.

“We will be transparent and fair, no matter who the person is.”

Speaking to FMT last Thursday, a day after he made his police report, Karthik said the policeman attacked him without reason when he stopped at a traffic junction on the morning of Nov 30. He was with his girl friend on a motorcycle.
