Liew rubbishes Anwar’s claim: ‘Suspension no benefit to BN’

KOTA KINABALU: Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department VK Liew has rubbished Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim’s claim that the suspension of four Pakatan Rakyat MPs will enable the Barisan Nasional government to amend the Federal Constitution.
“The two-thirds majority is calculated based on the total number of MPs in the House, that is, 222 and not 218 (which it will be minus the four).
“Two-thirds of it means 148 MPs. The BN has 137 MPs and is short of 11 MPs to reach the magic figure,” said Liew.
He said the only way for the BN government to benefit from the suspension of the four by Sabahan Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia was if the ruling coalition managed to get 11 more votes during a motion. There are six BN friendly “independent” MPs now in Parliament.
Anwar, Liew said, is not making sense with his allegation that his six-month suspension, together with four other opposition lawmakers, would enable the BN government to amend the constitution.
