The 1Malaysia concept is not a Government political agenda as it is aimed at fostering the spirit of togetherness and unity among Malaysians, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The Prime Minister said the concept and effort to promote the spirit should not be politicised.

“Although some might like to think that this (1Malaysia) is for political purposes, it is actually for nation-building.

“It is for us to come together and feel that we belong to one nation, one people with one vision and that is for us to march forward together to develop a truly prosperous, harmonious and successful 21st century nation,” he said Saturday.

Najid said this at a Christmas Tea Party hosted by the Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur, Tan Sri Murphy Pakiam at the Archbishop’s residence here. Also present was Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

He was apparently referring to Selangor Pakatan Rakyat Government’s ban on billboards depicting the 1Malaysia symbol.

Najib said the spirit of togetherness and ability to rise above political differences were important in ensuring continued peace and stability in the country.

He added that in today’s world, where a small group of extremists had drowned the voices of reason and common sense and hijacked the agenda of peace and moderation, it was important for the moderates in every faith — Muslims, Christians, Hindus and Buddhists — among Malaysians to speak up to reclaim their rightful place and the moral high ground.

“Religion teaches us to be tolerant, caring and respectful of the beliefs and practices of others.

“In our multi-racial society, we must constantly remind ourselves of the values that bind us together.

“We are bound by our common destiny. We are bound by our common heritage. We are bound by our need to forge ahead as one nation to face the challenges that lie ahead,” he said.
