Unisel students reject politicians as chancellor

(The Malay Mail) – University Industri Selangor (Unisel) students have rejected the proposal to nominate a political figure as the new chancellor of the university.

Its student body, Pro-Mahasiswa Unisel, has instead urged the university and the Selangor government to consider nominations to appoint a distinguished academician to head the university.

“We object to calls that Unisel appoint Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail or Dr Syed Husin Ali as the new chancellor. We want to see a prominent academician heading Unisel as the chancellor,” Pro-Mahasiswa Unisel president Mohd Nasir Abu Bakar told a Press conference here this morning.

He said the student body would like to see an academician, such as Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Khoo Kay Kim, as the incoming chancellor to replace the prime minister’s wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, who announced her resignation as the chancellor at the university’s convocation ceremony recently.

“Rosmah’s tenure will expire at the end of February and we want to see a prominent academician like Tan Sri Khoo at the helm as this is the way forward to propel the university to greater heights.”

Nasir said the student body would forward a memorandum to the Selangor State Secretary and Unisel management this afternoon.

“We reject anyone with a political background, either from Barisan Nasional or Pakatan Rakyat, as we view the appointment of a politician as non-progressive and a step backward for the university.”
