‘DNA’, ‘Male Y’ banners in town

Banners urging Anwar to provide his DNA sample in relation to his ongoing sodomy trial are appearing in the city.

(Free Malaysia Today) – Banners have appeared in the city urging Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim to provide his DNA sample in relation to his sodomy trial.

Two such banners were spotted hanging from a pedestrian bridge along Jalan Maharajalela here. It could not be ascertained if similar banners were put up elsewhere or who were behind it.

One of the banners read “Siapa Lelaki Y” (Who is Male Y?). It featured a mineral water bottle, toothbrush and the image of man under a blanket, whose face was covered with a question mark.

The second banner, which featured a photograph of Anwar, urged him to make a “sumpah laknat” (a religious oath, which if done fraudulently would invoke divine retribution) if he did not want to submit his DNA to the court.

Previously, chemist Nor Aidora Saedon testified at the sodomy trial that the DNA profile taken from a toothbrush, towel and mineral water bottle matched the DNA profile of Male Y, whose semen was found inside the anus of complainant Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.

Last week, the high court here ruled against the admissability of the toothbrush, towel and mineral water bottle, which were obtained from Anwar’s cell when he was detained overnight, as evidence.

The presiding judge, Justice Mohd Zabidin Mohd Diah ruled that the items were obtained by unfair means from the accused and therefore should be excluded.

The prosecution is now seeking a court order to compel Anwar to provide a DNA sample.

Over the weekend, some 30 Malay NGOs had launched a nationwide protest to pressure Anwar to submit his DNA to the court.
