Daim should be last to speak about graft, says Pakatan

KUALA LUMPUR, March 28 — Pakatan Rakyat (PR) scoffed at Tun Daim Zainuddin’s call for a graft-free government today, pointing to allegations of cronyism when he was twice finance minister under former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“He should be the last person to speak about corruption,” said DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang (picture).

“Daim’s statement is just an attempt to salvage the situation in Sarawak where corruption is rife,” Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said, referring to the upcoming state polls on April 16.

The former deputy prime minister also said that Daim was a key player in the privatisation of tolled highway concessionaire PLUS and also national carrier Malaysia Airlines (MAS), where he was accused of appointing his own proxies to benefit from these deals.

Daim said in an interview published today that investors were more concerned about the existence of a fair legal system and good infrastructure than they were about the cost of investing in Malaysia.

“A good investment climate is the result of joint support from all parties. Good governance — one that is free from corruption — transparency and certainty are what investors are looking for,” he said in a two-hour interview with Utusan Malaysia.
