Wan Azizah: It’s Not Anwar

(Bernama) – KUALA LUMPUR — Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail defended her husband Anwar Ibrahim today, saying Anwar was not the man featured in the sex video implicating a senior opposition leader.

Wan Azizah, who is Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president, said after watching the video clip on the Internet, she and her family were convinced that the man in the video was not Anwar.

“My family and I have watched the video that was published in a website. We decided to watch it after we were told that there were no obscene scenes in the video clip.

“Only we know Anwar intimately and it is clear that the actor in the video is not Anwar based on the man’s physique which is different (from that of Anwar’s),” she told a news conference at her house in Segambut, here.

The one-minute-47-second black and white video clip was uploaded on YouTube yesterday showing a man and a women in their towels.

Present at the news conference were PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar, Anwar’s father Ibrahim Abdul Rahman, DAP chairman Karpal Singh and Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim.

Wan Azizah said Anwar was currently in Sarawak for the state election.

She also said that although the police had confirmed that the sex video was genuine, it did not prove that her husband was the actor in the video.

“Genuine or not, that is not the issue. It’s not Anwar Ibrahim in the video and there was also a Thai language sentence in the video,” she said.

She said it was impossible for the man in the video to be her husband because since a year ago, their children had been accompanying him wherever he went, including during physiotherapy sessions for his back pain.

“All the allegations hurled against Anwar are absurd. How is it possible for him to do all these things which seem to contradict one another,” she said.

When asked on Anwar’s Omega wristwatch, Wan Azizah said it was in her safekeeping.

The group behind the screening of the sex video to journalists last month, namely former Melaka chief minister Rahim Tamby Chik, businessman Shazryl Eskay Abdullah and Perkasa treasurer Shuaib Lazim, claimed that they had handed over an Omega watch and the sex video to the police.

Meanwhile, Karpal urged police to arrest the three individuals, collectively known as “Datuk T”.

“The trio should be investigated and arrested because they have admitted that they were involved in the screening of the video. Screening a sex video is an offence whether the video is genuine or not,” he said.

Abdul Khalid said the sex video’s distribution should not have taken place because it was embarrassing.

“It’s as though we are encouraging the screening of obscene videos in the country,” he said.
