Taib’s son may face arrest warrant
(The Malay Mail) – The daughter-in-law of Sarawak chief minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud made an application to the Syariah High Court here today for an arrest warrant to be issued against her estranged husband Datuk Seri Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib for failing to turn up in court for settlement of their matrimonial properties.
Datin Seri Shahnaz Abdul Majid’s counsel, Dr Mohd Rafie Mohd Shafie, said Mahmud Abu Bekir, 48, had failed to appear in the lower court on two previous occasions.
Shahnaz had filed for divorce from Mahmud Abu Pekir on Feb 21.
Shahnaz, who is the sister to local jazz queen Datuk Sheila Majid, is seeking for the court to annul the marriage through ‘fasakh’ under Section 52(1)(d), Section 52(1)(h)(i), Section 52(1)(h)(ii) and Section 52(1)(h)(iv) of the Islamic Family Law (Federal Territories) Act 1984.
In her application she claimed they had not had an intimate relationship since 2001, and he had also caused her physical and mental torture.
Shahnaz is seeking RM100 million for ‘mutaah’ (alimony) and RM300 million for matrimonial property.
It had been reported Mahmud Abu Pekir was willing to divorce Shahnaz due to misunderstanding and their long separation and reach an out-of-the-court settlement in her RM400m claim.
The couple were married on Jan 9, 1992 and they have a 17-year-old son.
