Almost all SNAP candidate lose deposit

(Bernama) – All 26 SNAP candidates except Toh Heng San who contested the Katibas seat lost their deposit in the Sarawak polls today.

They were among 71 candidates, including 36 independents, who lost their RM5,000 deposit, which brought the total amount to RM355,000.

Besides the 25 SNAP candidates, four PKR and five Parti Cinta Malaysia candidates also did not see the light of day.

Candidates lose their deposit if they fail to secure at least one eighth of the total votes cast.

Of the 41 independents who tried their luck, only five got past the barrier, including George ak Lagong who won the Pelagus seat in a three-cornered fight with Stanley Nyitar @ Unja ak Malang (BN-PRS ) and a candidate from PKR.

He won by a majority of 2,837 votes.

The candidate with the lowest votes was Mathew Munan who contested as an independent for the Belaga seat. He only managed to poll 27 votes out of a total of 5,913 votes cast.

Dominique Ng Kim Ho, the incumbent for the Padungan seat, who contested as an independent candidate this time around, also lost his deposit when he only managed 439 votes.

In the 2006 election, Ng, who contested the seat on a PKR ticket, won the seat with a majority of 1,417 votes.
