Ummi Hafilda renews RM100m defamation suit
(The Malaysian Insider) – Ummi Hafilda Ali today submitted anew her RM100 million suit against a former partner and a news portal, following the case’s dismissal a fortnight ago.
Ummi Hafilda is suing Nor Azman Abdullah and Mkini Dotcom Sdn Bhd for defamation and slander over an article published in Malaysiakini on March 15, which she claimed was malicious and intended to embarrass her.
Last week, High Court judge Datin Zabariah Mohd Yusof had thrown out the 43-year-old businesswoman’s suit after lawyers for both sides neglected to appear during case’s mention.
Today, lawyer Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz explained the absence was due to the new e-filing system being used, which he blamed for the lack of notification of the court date.
Ummi Hafilda first came to prominence prior to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s sacking as deputy prime minister and first sodomy trial but had largely faded from the public eye since the time.
However, the sister to PKR deputy president Azmin Ali staged a comeback last year on the front page of Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia, where she urged Azmin to repent.
