Umno will not forgo principles of struggle: Muhyiddin

(Bernama) – MUAR: Umno will not forgo the principles of its struggle even when faced with a bitter and challenging political atmosphere, Umno Deputy President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Sunday.

The deputy prime minister said Umno would not forgo its political principles merely to garner temporary political support, unlike opposition parties like PAS and PKR.

“Umno is always steadfast in defending the sanctity of Islam and championing the cause of the Malays because these are the basic principles of the party’s struggle.

“PAS, on the other hand, can shelve its principles solely to garner political support,” Muhyiddin, who is Pagoh Umno Division head, said when opening the division’s delegates meeting at the Sri Pekembar Complex, here.

Muhyiddin said that the longer PAS remained in the Pakatan opposition pact, the more it would have to forgo its principles.

As for PKR, he said, the party’s struggle was only for its de facto leader.

Muhyiddin called on Umno members to remain steadfast with the principles, philosophy and essence of the party’s struggle, saying it would continue to become stronger and be greatly respected.

“Let’s not forgo the principles of our struggle because they determine the existence and perpetuity of Umno as a mighty Malay political party,” he said.

Muhyiddin said Umno had never adopted extreme approaches in championing the interests of Malays and Islam and had always acted fairly to all by taking into consideration the realities of a plural and multi-religious society in Malaysia. – Bernama
