Fong: Stand is to give Chinese voters time to think

(The Star) – KUALA LUMPUR: MCA’s statement that it will relinquish all government posts if it loses the Chinese support in the next general election is to allow voters time to fully understand their actions, said party presidential council member Tan Sri Dr Fong Chan Onn.

He said that although the date for the next election was still unknown, the statement by MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek was to give the Chinese voters time to fully understand the consequences of their actions before going to the polls.

“They (Chinese electorate) have the right to choose whoever they want. I am sure they are wise enough to see the reality of what will happen,” said Dr Fong after attending Kojadi Institute’s graduation ceremony at Wisma MCA here yesterday.

He said MCA would continue to work hard to win back Chinese support in line with the inclusiveness of all races under the 1Malaysia concept.

The party, stressed Dr Fong, would stand by its intention to give up all posts, adding that this was not a “threat” but a statement of fact.

Meanwhile, MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said DAP intended to pull the Chinese community to the Opposition and create racial polarisation.

He said DAP had always claimed to be a multiracial party and yet it intended to replace MCA to become the Chinese representative in the country.

“What DAP has done is that it has undoubtedly pushed the Chinese community towards the Opposition on the pretext of a two-party system.

“This will cause our country to spiral towards the abyss of racial polarisation,” he said in a statement yesterday.
