Rais warns netizens to respect the law

(The Malaysian Insider) KUALA LUMPUR, May 16 — Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim today reminded Malaysians to respect the law when disseminating information online.

He said that despite the absence of official restrictions on internet usage, internet users are subject to the laws of Malaysia and that an individual discovered to have committed a cyber crime would be subject to legal action.

He went on to say that the government exercises control over the internet, including cyber crime and matters related to sedition and pornography, through Section 233 of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Act.

In a related announcement, Rais confirmed that the MCMC is investigating the two bloggers who posted articles detailing an alleged pact to make Christianity the country’s official religion.

He added that the commission was expected to send the resulting investigation papers to the Attorney-General for further action.
