‘Zahid must apologise for remarks about Izzah’s child’

(Harakah Daily) – UMNO vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has been told to apologise for suggesting that the kidnap threat on Lembah Pantai member of parliament Nurul Izzah Anwar’s daughter was a “ploy” to gain sympathy.

Zahid, who is also the Defence minister, had earlier said that a police report lodged by Nurul over the threat she received on her mobile phone recently was “politically motivated”.

Describing the statement as “false, inappropriate and extremely prejudicial” to police investigation, PKR’s vice president N Surendran said Zahid’s remarks showed he could not be bothered about the safety of Nurul’s child.

“We condemn this reprehensible statement by Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and demand that he withdraw and apologise for it. We also ask for an assurance from the police that the investigations into the kidnap threat are being carried out expeditiously and fairly,” he told Harakahdaily in an immediate response to Zahid’s remarks.

Surendran said it was “grossly unbecoming” for a cabinet minister to issue such a statement which would undermine police investigation.

“Instead of showing concern for the serious threat made against an innocent child, Zahid has disgraced his high office by playing politics,” he added.

Second threat after death threat

Bernama earlier quoted Zahid as casting doubts over the police report lodged last week by Nurul Izzah (file pic left, with daughter Nur Safiyah)

“They are sitting on the edge of a cliff where even a gentle breeze can make them fall. That’s why they are looking for something to hold on to,” he said.
