“People First” policy? Then come help us now!

Residents of Bukit Jalil estate has called on the ‘people-centric’ Barisan Nasional government to help solve its land tussle with the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL)

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had went to the ground on Jun 5 in an effort to meet the Federal Territories constituents while promising to resolve issues.

“If he is sincere about helping the citizens, why don’t he come to Bukit Jalil and help us to protect our land?” a resident asked.

The Bukit Jalil residents were currently involved in a land tussle with DBKL, whereby the latter had labeled the residents as squatters although the residents were former estate workers at the Bukit Jalil rubber plantation.

“Four generations have lived here, and now DBKL wants to evict us by claiming that we are squatters. Our ancestors were here even before Merdeka, how can they twist the truth and claim that we are squatters?”

The spat between the residents and DBKL had been brought to the judicial courts, where the former had applied for an interim injunction to stop DBKL from evicting them.

Unfortunately for the residents, the Kuala Lumpur High Court recently ruled in favour of DBKL, giving the latter a free hand to evict the residents, in spite of damning evidence that proves otherwise.

To make matters worse, DBKL had on two occassions (May 25 and Jun 6), sent over a large team of 40 to 50 personnel comprising of its own officers, police and sometimes, gangsters to harass the residents despite the court order approving the extension of the interim injunction.

Residents expressed shock that DBKL and also the police, who were supposed to uphold the law, had shown contempt of the court by trespassing while the injunction was still in effect.

“How can they say that they were following orders of the (Federal Territories) Minister? Does this mean that ministers do not have to uphold the law?” another resident, K. Balakrishnan said.

To-date, more than 100 police reports had been lodged against DBKL for various transgressions like trespassing, sexual harassment, threats and physical violence, amongst others.
