Khairy: ‘Winnable’ candidates must be all-rounders

(The Star) – Candidates deemed “winnable” must be all-rounders and not just look credible on paper, said Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

He said they should understand what the party president wanted of them, too.

“If the candidate is excellent on paper but not well-accepted by our machinery, the party will not go anywhere,” he said in his winding-up speech.

He urged Umno members to stand behind the decision the president had made for the general election.

“We already have a ‘winnable’ president and a ‘winnable’ party,” he said. “Let’s now make sure we are a ‘winnable’ team.”

Khairy also noted that more youths had understood the Government’s transformation plans and accepted them, too.

“They have seen how serious we are,” he said.

“We have introduced many attractive programmes, such as the My First Home Scheme and minimum wage for youths,” he added.

The younger generation had also commended the Government for giving them more liberties such as repealing the Internal Security Act and amending the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971, Khairy said.

“We have changed our world views, accommodated their demands and allowed more freedom for youths.”
