Anwar appeal is at the A-G’s discretion
Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin says only the Attorney-General can decide as the executive has no say on this.
(Free Malaysia Today) – Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said today the decision to appeal against Anwar Ibrahim’s acquittal from his sodomy charge is at the Attorney-General’s discretion.
He said the decision to appeal against the court decision’s does not come under the executive’s purview.
“We, in the executive, will not comment further and will leave it to the prosecutors to consider fully as the time to appeal is two weeks and there is still time,” he told reporters here.
Yesterday, Anwar’s accuser Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan’s father, Azlan Mohd Lazim, called on the Attorney-General to appeal the opposition leader’s acquittal.
Later that evening, Solicitor-General II Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden said he would act on it and recommend a review of the court’s verdict.
He was the lead prosecutor in the high-profile two-year trial.
Yusof said they would first wait for the written judgment before proceeding to appeal.
