File an appeal AG, pleads Saiful
Saiful pleads with the Attorney-General, asking him to appeal against Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim’s acquittal.
(Free Malaysia Today) – Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan has pleaded with the Attorney-General (AG) to appeal against Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim’s acquittal in the Sodomy II case.
In a blog post, Saiful said that his lawyers – Tetuan Zamri Idrus & Co – had sent an official letter to Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail yesterday, citing a lack of response about an appeal from the AG’s Chambers.
“I have been forced to send this letter because to this day there has been no response towards my father’s and my open application whether you (the AG) would file an appeal or not.
“Time is running out. This appeal is important (to me) because it involves my reputation and future,” he said.
Saiful said that he could have made the appeal on his own, but said that the only person with the power to do so was the AG himself.
For an appeal to go through, a notice of appeal must first be filed within 14 days of judgment. With the Sodomy II case ending on Jan 9, the last day for the prosecution to appeal against the High Court’s decision to acquit Anwar would be Jan 25.
Solicitor-General II Mohamed Yusof Zainal Abiden – who was the Sodomy II prosecutor – told FMT that he was no longer involved in the case.
Due for a Feb 2 official retirement, Yusof said that the matter had been handed over to the AG’s Chambers’ appeal division.
With this in mind, Saiful hoped that the AG would consider his plea.
